How I Learned to Create Fine Art Portraits by Marsha Lynn

How I Learned to Create Fine Art Portraits (And Why I’m Still Learning Every Day)

When I first picked up a camera, I wasn’t thinking about becoming a Fine Art Photographer—I just wanted to take better pictures of my soon-to-be grandson. What started as a grandmother’s simple wish quickly turned into a lifelong journey of learning, growing, and creating art that tells stories.

Learning the Craft
My photography journey began 16 years ago with a few night classes at our local community college. I learned the basics—aperture, shutter speed, composition—but I quickly realized that technical skills were just the beginning.

A few years later, my son encouraged me to join the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). At the time, I wasn’t sure I wanted to, but he convinced me—and it turned out to be one of the smartest decisions I ever made. Through PPA, I had the privilege of working alongside Master Photographers who helped refine my eye for detail. During that time, I also became a Certified Professional Photographer and earned my Master Photographer distinction. Equally valuable were the friendships I made along the way—the people who supported, inspired, and challenged me as much as the lessons themselves.

Since then, I’ve made it a point to invest in attending one exclusive workshop a year with some of the world’s top children’s photographers. Iwona Podlasinska and Noelle Mirabella Photography inspired me not just in storytelling, light, intention, and wardrobe, but most importantly in how to connect with children and make them feel comfortable in front of a camera. . These lessons now guide every session I plan, from the first idea to the final fine art images.

Still Learning Every Day

Even after years of training, recognition, and awards, I’m still learning. That’s the beauty of art—it’s never “finished.” Each child I photograph teaches me something new, and each session challenges me to create in a fresh, thoughtful way.

Why I’ll Never Stop Learning

Photography is a lifelong journey, and that’s exactly what excites me. With every workshop I attend, every client I meet, and every portrait I create, I find new inspiration.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the camera or the credentials—it’s about the connection, the story, and the chance to create something magical for every family.

Why It Matters

At the end of the day, the “real cost” of photography isn’t about numbers—it’s about value. Every dollar invested in education, equipment, and creative tools ensures that when you hang your child’s portrait on the wall, you’re looking at artwork that will outlast trends and hold meaning for generations.

Because fine art photography isn’t just a picture. It’s a legacy.
