How to Plan a Storytelling Photo Session for Children

From Imagination to Art: A Five-Part Series on Storytelling Portraits and how they are created!

Every child has a little world of their own—a favorite toy, a curious habit, a wild idea that only makes sense in childhood. That’s the magic I try to bottle up in every portrait I create.

Welcome to my brand-new blog series, where I take you behind the scenes of the whimsical world we build during children’s sessions. Over the next five Mondays, I’ll be sharing how I use storytelling and artistry to create portraits that feel like a page from a storybook.

But this magic doesn’t happen by accident. Each image I create is carefully crafted around five essential elements—each one designed to bring your child’s story to life through Fine Art photography.

Here’s what’s coming each Monday:

a 2 year old boy wearing jeans with suspenders and a red shirt and red rain boots sits in the grass with 3 baby ducks. One little duck is resting on his head as the photographer for Mars, Pa takes the picture.

Week One:  How I Choose props for Children Photography Sessions.

A treasure map, a lantern, a honey jar... the smallest item can spark the biggest adventure.

Week Two: Wardrobe carefully selected for storytelling.

From the perfect dresses to little overalls for boys and girls, clothing helps tell the visual story.

tow little boys wearing overalls is running through a field. The oldest brother has a blue kite while the little bother runs behind him..
two little boys wearing overalls playing a game of hide and seek at an old fence. The big brother is hiding behind the gate and the little brother is running through the gate.

Week 3: Photography Location Guide: What to look for and why

My 40-acre studio of fields, fences, and forest trails is more than a backdrop—it’s part of the magic.

Two little sisters dress I blue dresses are playing by a creek near Mars, Pa. One is kneeling with a bucket while the other is pouring water Ito the creek from an antique blue pitcher.

Week 4: Letting Kids Lead: Personality-Focused Children’s Portraits

Baseball, bugs, fairy wings... we follow their magic to make portraits meaningful.

Week 5: From Digital to Art: The Power of Printed Portraits

Why I believe portraits belong on your walls, in albums, and in your family's legacy—not just on your phone.

Whether you’re planning a session or simply love the art of storytelling, I hope you’ll follow along.
See you every Monday!
