When I took my very first photography class, my instructor had us switch our cameras to RAW—and I’ve never taken it of that setting. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what made RAW so powerful, but I quickly learned that this single setting holds the key to transforming a good photo into a breathtaking piece of fine art.
Think of a RAW file as the storybook before the illustrations are added. It's packed with potential—every shadow, every sparkle of light, every tiny detail your camera saw. Unlike a JPEG, which is more like a printed page that’s already edited, RAW files give me all the ingredients I need to turn a simple photo into a fine art portrait full of magic, mood, and meaning. ✨
🖼 Before & After: A Peek Behind the Scenes
This week, I’m sharing a few before-and-after portraits from one session of a little boy I recently photographed. You’ll see the original RAW file — full of potential — alongside the final fine art image, complete with storytelling edits and signature touches.
Step 1: Selecting the Gems
After a session, I import all my RAW files into Lightroom using my Wacom tablet and pen — I haven’t used a mouse in years! I scroll through every image, looking for the portraits that tug at my heart and whisper, “There’s a story here.”
📸 Before & After:
This image was already a sweet portrait — but by adding more woods around him and guiding the focus toward his expression, the scene began to feel like a page from a storybook. Subtle changes… big impact.
Step 2: A Gentle First Touch
Still in Lightroom, I make basic edits — a gentle crop, some lighting adjustments, just enough to help parents see where the magic can happen. This is still just the beginning.
📸 Before & After: A hint of light, a promise of more
Step 3: A Taste of Fine Art
Next, I take one or two favorites all the way through my full editing process. This gives parents a vision of what’s possible.
Once I’ve chosen my favorites, the magic begins.
Every now and then, a portrait captures my heart — even if it isn’t technically perfect. In this next example, my speedy little subject darted as I was pressing shutter. The focus landed just behind his eye… but oh, the expression, the light, the feeling was everything I hoped for.
Rather than letting it go, I took it into Photoshop — with help from my Topaz plug-in and my ever-faithful Wacom pen. A gentle brushstroke here, a little clarity there… and just like that, a moment nearly missed became a masterpiece.
📸 Before & After: What began as a near miss transformed into a storybook portrait — full of wonder, warmth, and just a little magic.
Step 4: Helping Clients Choose
Whether it’s a storybook album or one unforgettable portrait for the wall, I guide my clients to choose what speaks to their heart — knowing each piece will become true art.
Step 5: The Real Transformation Begins
Back in Photoshop, I begin the fine art process. I use my Wacom pen like a brush, painting with light and detail. I use a mix of tools and plugins like Topaz and yes — a bit of AI magic when needed. It’s not about shortcuts; it’s about bringing out what was already there, just waiting to shine.
📸 Before & After: Sometimes the perfect setting still needs a little nudge. In this example, a trusty suitcase helped our little adventurer pose just right — but for the final piece, I swapped it for a moss-covered log using Photoshop’s AI tools. A small change, but one that turned this joyful moment into a scene straight from a woodland storybook.
Step 6: Printed Perfection
Once each chosen image is polished to perfection, I send it off to the professional print lab I’ve trusted for years. Whether it’s a classic luster print, a bold metal piece, or a gallery-wrapped canvas, they make sure every color sings and every detail glows.
Step 7: The Final Touch
For clients who order wall art, I offer custom framing — a finishing touch that brings everything together. It’s one less thing for busy parents to worry about in the joyful chaos of raising little ones. All they need to do is choose the moment they want to remember forever — I take care of the rest.
✨ The Real Secret?
It’s not just the tools or the software — it’s the heart. It’s the obsession. Every part of my process — from Lightroom and Photoshop to the last lovingly placed frame — is guided by one belief: childhood is art worth preserving.
💛 Let’s Make Magic Together
Every childhood holds a thousand little stories — some whispered in smiles, some caught in a twinkle of the eye. Whether it’s a storybook album to treasure forever or one breathtaking portrait for your wall, I’d love to help you preserve those moments before they flutter away.
